Shorts, Reels, TikTok: the short-form strategy that scales

TikTok and Reels are no longer optional platforms. They are the primary discovery channels for B2C content, and they are rapidly taking over B2B as well. YouTube Shorts surpassed 70 billion daily views in 2026, and Instagram has been prioritising Reels over the photo feed for three years now.

The question is no longer “should we be making vertical video?” but “how can we do it without spending 20 hours a week on it?”.

The trap: producing for the sake of producing

Many creators force themselves to publish three Reels a week. The result: burnout within two months, or content that becomes increasingly bland and generic. The right approach is to extract short-form clips from an already-recorded long-form episode — not to reinvent the wheel with every single post.

The extraction system

From a 60-minute video podcast, you can identify 4 to 6 standout moments: a punchline, a striking statistic, a brief story, a disagreement, or an emotional beat. Each moment becomes a 30 to 60-second Short.

Over 12 months, at a rate of one podcast per week, that gives you 250 to 300 short clips ready to be distributed across the three main platforms. You stop chasing content; you harvest it.

How to select the right moments

  • Punchline: a phrase delivering a strong or counter-intuitive viewpoint
  • Statistic: a surprising figure that stops viewers in their tracks
  • Short story: an anecdote under 45 seconds with a twist
  • Disagreement: a moment where the guest contradicts conventional wisdom
  • Emotion: a laugh, a hesitation, an authentic moment

The first 2-second hook

In vertical video, you have two seconds to capture attention. Open with a bold statement, never with “Hi, my name is…”. The face must be in frame from the very first frame, and the hook text must appear immediately.

Hooks that work in 2026: “No one will tell you this, but…”, “I made the mistake for 5 years of…”, “Here is why 90% of [X] fail”, “The thing I wish I’d known before…“.

Captions are non-negotiable

85% of views happen without sound. Use dynamic captions, highlighted keywords, and word-by-word animation. No compromises here — a short clip without captions loses 70% of its potential.

Tailor to each platform

The exact same clip will not perform identically on TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. TikTok favours authenticity and humour. Reels values aesthetics and pacing. Shorts rewards informational value and watch time.

Adapt the opening second, the title, and the thumbnail for each platform. The content stays the same; the packaging changes.

A sustainable rhythm

3 to 5 short clips per week is more than enough to trigger the algorithm. Beyond that, marginal returns drop sharply. Better four outstanding Shorts than ten mediocre ones.
